This video explains the role of the Mecciarello Lab  in the EU-funded REACT project. We are taking on one of insect genetics’ toughest challenges: inserting genes into the Y chromosome of the Mediterranean fruit fly using CRISPR-Cas9. Our goal is to develop Genetic Sexing Strains (GSS) that enable early sex separation — a crucial step for the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. Serafima Davydova, was a PhD researcher at the Mecciarello Lab. In this video, she explains how her research on genetic sexing strains (GSS) in the Mediterranean fruit fly connects to the development of precision pest control strategies. From CRISPR-based toolkit development to groundbreaking work on sex conversion, Serafima shares insights into two key publications that lay the groundwork for next-generation Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) applications.
